Egypt first-choice goalkeeper El-Shennawi to miss rest of AFCON

Egypt will have to manage without goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawi for the remainder of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, due to a thigh injury sustained in their opening match against Mali Tuesday evening.

"El-Shennawi underwent scans Wednesday morning and the result wasn't encouraging; he will be under treatment for two weeks," the team's executive manager Ehab Leheta said.

The 25-year-old Zamalek keeper started in the kick-off match of the Pharaohs' tournament games, but was forced out by the injury in minute 25.

Long-time Egypt keeper Essam El-Hadady, 44, subbed in for El-Shennawi, breaking the record for the oldest player ever to play in the tournament.

The third goalkeeper in the squad is Ahly's Sherif Ekrami, who also suffers from a thigh injury.

In a desperate performance, Egypt were held to a goalless draw against Mali on Tuesday as Ghana defeated Uganda 1-0 in the same group earlier in the day.

The record-holders of seven trophies will continue their bid Saturday against Uganda, four days before they face-off against Ghana.
