Egypt’s left-back Mohamed Abdel-Shafi has been confirmed to miss Wednesday's important game against Ghana in the third round of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
"Abdel-Shafi has failed medical examinations and he is officially out of the Ghana match," Egypt’s delegation head Hazem El-Hawary told reporters during the team's stay in Gabon.
The Ahly and Jeddah defender sustained an ankle sprain in the 1-0 win over Uganda on Saturday but played the full game.
The Pharaohs Argentinean manager Hector Cuper has reassured the fans that his squad has good substitutes for Abdel-Shafi.
"Ahmed Fathi, Omar Gaber and Karim Hafez are ready to replace Abdel-Shafi," Cuper said in a press conference Monday.
Egypt need to win or at least draw against Ghana as they are second in group D with four points, two behind Ghana who ensured their place in the last eight after a narrow 1-0 victory over Mali earlier on Saturday.
Egypt's loss would be a great present for Mali who need to win against Uganda to collect four points.
