FIFA chief Gianni Infantino and his family visited the Giza Plateau on Friday morning to tour the pyramids and Sphinx a few hours before attending the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final game between Algeria and Senegal, which will take place at Cairo Stadium.

They were escorted by general manager of the Giza pyramids area Ashraf Mohie El-Din, who said that they entered the Great Pyramid of Khufu, visited the Sphinx and the panorama area, where they documented their trip with photos.

"The FIFA president was impressed with the pyramids and their miracle of engineering," Mohie El-Din was quoted as saying on the Ministry of Antiquities official Facebook page.

"Infantino told me that when the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids the rest of the world was living in caves. It is a great civilization," Mohie El-Din said.

Mohie El-Din said that the FIFA president also promised to visit the area again to see the remaining historical sites.

Mohie El-Din gifted Infantino a replica statuette of the Sphinx.

Infantino arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to attend Thursday's CAF congress as well as the Africa Cup of Nations final between Algeria and Senegal.

He also toured the famous Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, visiting several halls including one containing ancient mummies.

Egypt is hosting the 2019 African Cup of Nations (2019 AFCON) from 21 June to 19 July at six major stadiums in various locations across the country.

The FIFA boss congratulated Egypt for its incredible organising of the 2019 AFCON during his visit to the Confederation of African Football Congress’s headquarters in Cairo on Thursday.
