CAF fine Egypt for breaching media protocols of 2021 AFCON

Egypt s foward Mohamed Salah (C) arrives at a training session at an annex of the Olembe stadium in Yaounde on February 1, 2022, two days ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2021 semi-final football match between Cameroon and Egypt. AFP

According to a statement by CAF, the fine comes after the EFA failed to honour the pre-match press conference on Saturday, ahead of facing Morocco in the AFCON quarterfinals.

“Egypt FA have 60 days to pay the 50,000 USD fine. The other 50,000 USD is suspended on the condition that Egypt FA are not found guilty with a similar offence during the Total Energies African Cup Of Nations, Cameroon 2021,” read a statement on CAF’s official website late on Tuesday.

CAF stressed that attending the press conferences is a part of the obligations for all the participating teams.

The EFA announced in a statement at the incident’s time that Egypt's news conference ahead of Morocco game was called off due to a traffic jam.

The EFA attributed the no-show of Coach Carlos Queiroz and skipper Amr El-Sulaya at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium to "traffic congestion and the view of the security forces accompanying the convoy that the players' bus must be delivered first to the team's residence," the EFA statement explained.

After beating Morocco 2-1 in the quarters on Sunday, the Pharaohs booked a place at the prestigious tournament semis where they will face hosts Cameroon on Thursday.

Record seven-time African champions Egypt are seeking their first AFCON title since 2010, while Cameroon are seeking their sixth since their last win in 2017.
