Ghana face setback ahead of 2023 AFCON as Arsenal's Partey undergoes surgery

The 30-year-old midfielder is expected to spend a long time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery for a thigh injury, as reported by The Athletic on Friday.

The sports website, owned by The New York Times, revealed that Arsenal anticipates Partey will be out of action for a period of six to eight weeks.

Partey, who joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Atletico Madrid, has been limited to just four Premier League appearances this season due to a groin injury that kept him out for the entirety of September.

The Ghanaian midfielder is a vital player in Ghana's squad, having scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists in 45 appearances for the Black Stars since making his international debut in 2016.

Despite this setback, Ghana has already secured a place in the 2023 AFCON, which is slated to be held in Cote d'Ivoire in January 2024.

The team is placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde for the AFCON finals.

Ghana's campaign in the AFCON will commence with a match against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024, followed by a clash against Egypt in the second round of group-stage games, four days later.
