The Blue Sharks became the first team to secure a ticket to the round of 16 in AFCON 2023 after a resounding 3-0 victory over Mozambique in the second round of Group B.

Mendes, who was awarded the Man of the Match, lauded their fans for their crucial role in the victory, stating that it felt like playing at home. "They provided unwavering support throughout the match. We had the sensation of playing in our own backyard, and we couldn't afford to let them down," Mendes remarked.

Cape Verde commenced their AFCON campaign with a surprising 2-1 triumph over Ghana.

The Blue Sharks aimed to dispel any notion that the victory was a fluke.

"We were determined to confirm our impressive performance against Ghana and, above all, secure qualification for the next round. We are the first nation to achieve qualification. We have successfully completed our initial mission. Now, we will rest and recuperate before our next match," Mendes added.

Mendes continued: "I cannot predict how far we will go. Presently, we have reached the last 16, and we simply need to keep working as we have been. We are aware that it won't be easy, but we have faith in ourselves and our efforts."

On Monday, Cape Verde will face the seven-time champions Egypt, while Ghana will take on Mozambique on the same day.
