In an official statement, the EFA stated: "El-Shennawy is expected to be out of action for three months."

The 35-year-old shot-stopper sustained the shoulder injury during Egypt's recent 2-2 draw against Cape Verde in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage.

This setback adds to the challenges faced by Egypt's coach, Rui Vitoria, who is already coping with the absence of captain and star winger Mohamed Salah due to a hamstring injury suffered in a match against Ghana.

El-Shennawy played a crucial role in helping the Pharaohs secure a spot in the round of 16, finishing second in Group B with three points from three draws.

Egypt is set to face DR Congo in the AFCON 2023 knockout stage on Sunday, with NBE Club goalkeeper Mohamed Abo Gabal expected to fill in for El-Shennawy in the remaining matches of the tournament.
