Morocco aim beyond World Cup success at AFCON: Amrabat

Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat declared on Tuesday his team’s aspiration to achieve bigger success than their impressive quarter-final run at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as they set sights on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Atlas Lions, who captivated fans worldwide with their spirited display in Qatar, were the first team to arrive in Abidjan on Sunday, eager to kick off their continental campaign on 17 January.

“The camp atmosphere is great and the weather is very hot; we train seriously to be on time,” Amrabat told the Moroccan Football Federation channel.

“We realize that the competition in AFCON is not easy; our goal is to make the Moroccan people happy,” he added.

“We're entering this tournament with ambition and a desire to replicate the success of the World Cup, or even surpass it,” he said.

“We did not come to Côte d’Ivoire for ourselves. We came for our country, and we promise the fans that we will fight to make them happy,” Amrabat concluded.

The upcoming AFCON will be held from 13 January to 11 February.

The Moroccan team will begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on 17 January in Group F, which also includes DR Congo and Zambia.
