Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet said Egypt’s sole objective at the Africa Cup of Nations is to lift the trophy, stressing that the Pharaohs approach every match with the same winning mindset ahead of Monday’s group finale against Angola.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Sunday, the winger warned that the third-round clash would be far from straightforward, underlining Egypt’s respect for all opponents and insistence on competing only to win.
Preparation for the Angola encounter began immediately after Egypt’s victory over South Africa, Trezeguet said, as the squad sharpened its focus for the decisive phase of the tournament.
The 29-year-old highlighted the depth of experience within the squad, saying Egypt consistently produces players capable of carrying responsibility. He added that he was fully ready to execute the coaching staff’s instructions, wherever required on the pitch and whenever called upon.
Egypt, currently camped in Morocco, are targeting nothing less than continental success, Trezeguet said, describing the mission as winning the title and “raising Egypt’s name high among African nations”.
He paid tribute to head coach Hossam Hassan, calling him a role model for every Egypt international thanks to his technical expertise, drive, and winning mentality, forged during a decorated playing career with the national team.
Trezeguet added that the presence of Hossam Hassan alongside his brother and assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan is a major asset, providing the squad with added motivation and authority born of their achievements with Egypt.
Egypt have already secured qualification for the round of 16 from Group B after back-to-back wins over Zimbabwe and South Africa. Victory over Angola would complete a perfect group campaign as the seven-time champions continue their pursuit of another Africa Cup of Nations crown.
