Egypt's Supreme Presidential Elections Commission (SPEC) which supervised the country's 2012 presidential vote that brought ousted president Mohamed Morsi to power has rejected an appeal by former candidate Ahmed Shafiq against the results of that election.
The commission, which includes some of Egypt's top judges, said its decision to reject the appeal was unanimous, and invoked in its ruling the constitutional article that bars appeals against the commission's decisions.
Shafiq lodged an appeal with the SPEC in late May, claiming the results had been rigged.
Morsi narrowly defeated Shafiq, who served as ousted president Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, garnering 51.7 percent of the vote in a hard-fought final run-off in June 2012.
