Egyptian authorities tightened security at key locations in Cairo on Monday, a public holiday which commemorates the victories of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Military helicopters staged a show in the skies above Alexandria on Monday afternoon in celebration of the 41st anniversary of the war, known in Egypt as the October war.

Military planes are expected to fly over governorates nationwide, dispensing gift coupons.

Security measures at Cairo International Airport have also been increased to manage tens of thousands of Egyptians pilgrims returning from the hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Monday also marks the third day of Eid Al-Adha, a four-day Islamic festival. Egyptians typically celebrate the holiday by making family outings to parks and other public places.

Last year, the 6 October holiday saw mass celebrations in several public squares under the protection of the army.

Opposition rallies also took place, and clashes erupted between supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and security forces which left at least 51 people dead, mainly civilians.
