Public services at the British embassy in Cairo remain suspended for a second day, according to the embassy's website.

Ambassador John Casson said the decision was taken to ensure the security of the embassy and its staff.

In London, a spokesperson for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) confirmed to Ahram Online that the decision to close the embassy was taken "for security reasons, and until further notice."

The embassy said on Monday that the British Consulate-General in Alexandria was operating as normal.

"It is important that British nationals know that this step does not affect our general travel advice for British nationals in Egypt and that British nationals who need help can still receive consular assistance by calling," Casson said.

The Egyptian foreign ministry said on Sunday that the suspension of services by the British embassy in Cairo was "just a precautionary measure."

Casson expressed gratitude for the Egyptian government's cooperation over the matter.
