The high-ranking member of the Socialist Popular Alliance was killed by birdshot when marching in commemoration of 25th January martyrs

Egypt's prosecution said it has identified the killer of Shaimaa El-Sabagh, a female protester who's shooting to death last month sparked an uproar, Ahram Arabic news website said.

Thirty two-year-old leftist activist died from birdshot allegedly fired by police during a peaceful rally on 24 January to commemorate the martyrs of the 25 January revolution on its fourth anniversary near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square.

The prosecution said late on Monday that the killer has been identified through surveillance cameras and would be arrested. A probe into the case has been underway.

El-Sabagh was a leading member of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party and her death has stirred up strident criticism of Egypt's heavy-handed police and its lethal use of force against protesters.

Her movement had accused the police of "premeditated murder" and a party member was briefly detained on suspicion of the killing.
