Collapse of residential building kills 7, injures 2 in Cairo’s Shubra

Building renovations were the reason behind the collapse, according to the head of civil protection

Seven people were killed and two others wounded late Saturday when four floors of a residential building collapsed in Cairo's working class Shubra district, MENA reported.

Head of civil protection, Gamal Halawa, said that the property owner was making renovations to the building that caused the collapse.

Earlier in September, four people died in a similar incident when a dilapidated building collapsed in the governorate of Assiut, south of Cairo.

It is not uncommon for buildings to collapse in Egypt, often due to their age, illegal additions, and failure to comply with building regulations.
