Seven protesters in Tahrir Square were seriously injured Monday after being brutally set upon and attacked by unknown thugs.

According to an Ahram correspondent in the square, a man suddenly swore at popular committee members deployed at one of the entrances and told them that he would bring his friends to beat them up.

Infuriated at what he said, the popular committee members ran after him trying to catch him. He rushed into the entrance of an old building, where thugs wielding bladed weapons were waiting for them.

After they were mercilessly assaulted, three of the seven demonstrators sustained severe wounds. According to protesters, at least one of the the assailants has been detained.

A handful of thugs and thieves have been caught by demonstrators since the Friday of Determination, which marked the beginning of the ongoing nationwide sit-in last weekend.
