Giza Criminal Court renewed the detention of photographer and activist Esraa El-Taweel for 45 days on Monday, with photos of the 23-year-old crying during the court session widely circulating on social media.

El-Taweel is tried on charges of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, from which hails Egypt's ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, and spreading false information to tarnish the country's image and hinder public safety.

A campaign was launched in June, reporting the disappearance of the freelance photographer who was found weeks later when the interior ministry announced she had been arrested.

El-Taweel has been detained for 155 days pending trial, according to Freedom for the Brave Facebook page, a grassroots movement that calls for the release of prisoners in political cases.

The detained photographer was injured when she was shot in January 2014 during clashes in Mostafa Mahmoud square. She walks with crutches, as appears in the circulated pictures.
