Clashes erupted today between police and family members of workers who had died in a factory collapse in Alexandria.

The family members were outraged when police refused to let them near the site to check on their injured relatives or identify the bodies of those killed.

According to an Alexandria governorate official who was on the site, 16 people have been reported dead and ten were reported injured. However, eyewitnesses claim the death toll may have reached 20.

The collapse, which occurred last Sunday, was blamed on heavy rain and bad weather, the Middle East News Agency reported.
