As dusk approaches, whole sections of the barrier wall, erected around the Israeli embassy, have come crashing down followed by scenes of celebrations. Numbers continue to steadily grow.
About 2000 protesters congregated at about 5pm in front of the embassy, set on dismantling the concrete wall which was set up by security forces around the premises.
Military police and state security forces are attempting to protect the wall as protesters, using everything from hammers to crow bars to their bare hands are trying to tear it down. Dividing themselves into groups, the protesters are working on dismantling different sections of the wall. Military police nearby did nothing to stop them.
The local authority had built the wall last week in an attempt to secure the embassy after a series of protests were held in front of the building: protests highlighted by the actions of a protester, now dubbed “flagman”, who scaled 15 floors from the outside of the apartment building to bring down the Israeli flag and replace it with the Egyptian one.
The protesters’ actions highlight a deep discontentment over the killing of 5 Egyptian policeman on the Egyptian border with Israel.
