Sameh Shoukry is in Brussels for a meeting of the Egyptian-European Partnership Council

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with the EU's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, in Brussels on Monday for discussions on a range of pressing issues, including the Qatar crisis, developments in Libya and the ongoing issue of Nile water.

According to an Egyptian foreign ministry statement, Shoukry met with Mogherini and Johannes Hahn, the Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations, with Egypt-EU relations also on the agenda.

On the topic of the Qatar crisis, Shoukry outlined the positions of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain. He said that Egypt would not compromise on the demands it has put to Qatar, particularly after all the sacrifices Egypt had made in the face of terrorism.

Mogherini, meanwhile, outlined the EU's position on the Qatar issue and on the "war on terrorism" in general.

Regarding the Cooperative Framework Agreement, Shoukry stated that the EU's recognition of the technical program to manage the region's water sources contradicts the EU's policies adopted in other regions, which are based on respect for international law and the promotion of stability.

He added that the EU's insistence on implementing the program as part of the Nile Basin initiative will deepen the current split among its members.

The Egyptian and EU officials also discussed the developments in Libya and agreed that the only way to resolve the crisis was through a comprehensive political settlement.

As for Syria, Shoukry outlined the Egypian position, which is based on supporting the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people while ensuring national unity and fighting terrorism in the country.

Minister Sameh Shoukry is currently in Brussels, heading the Egyptian delegation at a meeting of the Egyptian-European Partnership Council, which will be held in Brussels on Tuesday.
