Egypt will witness the annual Perseid meteor shower starting midnight on Friday till early Sunday, with this year’s shower expected to be the largest in 97 years, Egypt's MENA news agency announced on Thursday.

The head of the Astronomy Department at the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysics Research Ashraf Tadros told MENA that the meteor shower should be visible to the naked eye at night from anywhere in the world.

He called on Egyptians to enjoy the rare celestial phenomenon in an area clear of light pollution, adding that the moonlight should not obscure the meteor shower.
