A Cairo misdemeanor appeals court on Monday handed down a commuted one-year prison sentence to Egyptian female pop singer Sheema for her starring in a sexually suggestive music video.

Shaymaa Ahmed, known by the stage-name Sheema, was handed the commuted prison term instead of a previous sentence of two years in prison. In the previous sentence, which was issued in December, Sheema was convicted of "inciting debauchery and immorality" following an appeal.

The court also ordered the singer, who is already behind bars, to pay a fine of EGP 10,000 (approximately $560).

In the video for the song "I Have Issues," the little-known singer engaged in sexually suggestive behaviour, sparking controversy and outrage in the country last November.

Sheema apologised for the video in a Facebook post, saying she did not expect such a backlash.
