The offices of three NGOs in Cairo were raided Thursday afternoon by Egyptian police and staff from the public-prosecutor's office. The three human rights organisations are The Arab Center for Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP), National Democratic Institute & Republican Institute.
Nasser Amin the head of the ACIJLP is also a member in Egypt's National Council for Human Rights.
While it is not yet confirmed why the three NGOs were stormed, human rights activists expressed their fear that this is a part of an attack orchestrated by the government against all human rights groups as part of a campaign to defame those "who dared to question the violations committed by the old regime and then by the ruling military council after the ouster of Mubark."
"In Mubarak's time the government never dared to do such a thing," said prominent human rights activists Negad El-Bourai on his Twitter account.
"We are still not sure of anything," said Emad Mubarak from the Freedom of Expression Center, "however their excuse could be that they are auditing the files after accusations that many NGOs are receiving foreign funds."
