449 prisoners to be released in Egypt to mark 6 October war anniversary

Egypt's interior ministry said on Thursday that it would release 449 prisoners in accordance with a presidential pardon issued earlier this month.

The ministry will release 151 prisoners after their cases are assessed by a special committee, the ministry said in a statement on its official Facebook page.

The ministry added that it will conditionally release 298 other prisoners. Prisoners granted conditional release must report to a police station on a regular basis or are subject to police supervision in other ways, per Egyptian law.

Earlier this month, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a decree pardoning a number of prisoners on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the 6 October 1973 war with Israel.

The decree, the details of which were published in the country’s official gazette on 3 October, tasked the interior ministry with examining prisoners' cases to determine who deserves a pardon.

Egyptian presidents traditionally issue pardons several times a year, usually on major national and religious holidays.
