The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) elected on Monday Britain, Senegal and Fiji to discuss Egypt's human rights portfolio within the framework of the council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

On Sunday, the government's official delegation arrived in Geneva to represent Egypt during the 34th UNHRC meetings.

The delegation is headed by Omar Marwan, minister of parliamentary affairs, representatives from the foreign and interior ministries, a representative of the General Prosecution, as well as the head of Egypt's National Council for Human Rights Mohamed Fayek.

The Egyptian high-level delegation is scheduled to take part in the upcoming UNHRC meeting on 13 November in Geneva, with the aim of “launching an interactive dialogue on the content of the report, which outlines Egypt’s various efforts over the past five years to fulfil human-rights obligations under international agreements,” according to a foreign ministry statement.

The delegation will be presenting the Egyptian national report before the UPR Working Group of the UNHRC in Geneva. The UPR is an important mechanism in the UN human-rights system.

This is the third time Egypt has been reviewed under the UPR mechanism, the first two times were in 2010 and 2014. The Egyptian national report is the product of collective national efforts in which all government ministries have participated.

Preparing for the Geneva session, the Egyptian government held a series of follow-up meetings with a number of ministries and civil society institutions to review the country's efforts in the human rights domain.

The Egyptian government adheres to its international human rights commitments, Marwan said, noting that it implemented several recommendations adopted by the 2014 UPR session.

Egypt has repeatedly slammed in recent years accusations of human rights abuses levelled by international human rights organisations, rejecting foreign interference by rights groups in Egypt's domestic affairs.
