Egypt's naval forces have carried out combat training activities in the Mediterranean Sea aimed at imposing maritime control on the country's economic zone and securing vital targets in deep waters, the military said on Wednesday.
Marine units including a Mistral helicopter carrier carried out a series of activities off the country's northern coast as part of the training, the army said in a statement issued on Facebook.
These included the launch of an over-the-horizon anti-ship harpoon missile by an Egyptian submarine, it added.
The annual training is part of an Egyptian military strategy designed to enhance the capability of forces to face challenges and threats in the region, the statement added.
Egypt has carried out a series of military exercises with a host of countries over the past few years including the US, France, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, and Bahrain. These programmes are meant to exchange experience and boost military-to-military relationships with the armed forces of other countries.
