Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas hailed ousted president Hosni Mubarak following the former Egyptian leader’s death on Tuesday, saying Mubarak was a supporter of the Palestinian cause.

In a statement by his office, Abbas praised "the positions of the late president in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people in achieving their rights to freedom and independence."

"Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit mourned the former president, describing him as “a president who has worked with commitment and dedication to achieve peace and development in Egypt and the Middle East”.

“Mubarak was devoted to Arabism and the Palestinian cause and a supporter of the Arab League and its role,” he said, hailing his role as an Air Force commander during October 1973 War.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also hailed the former leader for his efforts to achieve peace.

"On behalf of Israel’s citizens and the government of Israel, I want to express deep sorrow over the passing of president Hosni Mubarak,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Calling him a "personal friend," Netanyahu said the former Egyptian leader "led his nation to peace and security, to peace with Israel."

The UAE announced that flags would fly at half-mast in mourning of the former leader, and UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash hailed Mubarak’s "wisdom and courage" and his efforts to resolve several crises in the Arab world.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent a message to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi offering condolences over Mubarak’s death.

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa also expressed his "deepest sorrow" over Mubarak’s passing.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his condolences to the family of Hosni Mubarak.

"Our mission is to work with the current [Egyptian] government to develop a better partnership…and we continue to work on that," Pompeo said during remarks to the press.
