Egypt's authorities evacuated thousands of street vendors stationed at Attaba and Mouski squares in Downtown Cairo to curb the spread of the coronavirus epidemic.

The municipalities of Attaba and Mouski squares organised the evacuation of thousands of street vendors in two of the largest informal markets in Cairo in accordance with the government’s orders to ban gatherings.

According to official statements, the order is effective until 1 April.

Mohamed, a florist, told Ahram Online that the evacuation included the two squares and the main streets around them where thousands of street vendors are usually located.

“An official order was earlier issued to relocate street vendors but it wasn't enforced," he added.

Photos circulating on social media showed the two squares being emptied of people, with some wooden stalls covered with cloth and plastic still in place.

The government last week ordered entertainment outlets be closed at 7pm to limit mass gatherings.
