Egypt’s electoral authority accepts 762 candidates for upcoming Senate elections

Egypt’s National Election Authority announced on Sunday that it had accepted 762 candidates for the Senate elections which will take place next month.

 
According to the president of the authority, Lasheen Ibrahim, the body rejected the candidacy of 150 others who did not meet the terms of the candidacy and did not submit the required papers.
 
The names of the accepted candidates will be published in the state-owned newspapers Al-Akhbar and Al-Gomhouria, he added.
 
The names of the candidates for each governorate will also be published in local court buildings for three days.
 
Ibrahim added that those rejected have the right to appeal in front of the administrative court.
 
Senate elections are set to take place 11-12 August, with Egyptians abroad scheduled to cast their ballots 9-10 August.
 
The results of the first round of voting will be announced 19 August.
 
Second round votes will be on 8-9 September, while the results will be announced 16 September, the NEA said.
 
The Senate will have 300 seats, one third of which will be elected via the individual candidacy system, another third through the closed party list system, and the final third to be named by the president.
 
Senate members' tenure is set at five years.
 
House of Representatives elections will also take place this year.
