Members of Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), including council head Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and SCAF number-two Sami Anan, held meetings on Tuesday with representatives of 18 Egyptian political parties.
Attendees at Tuesday’s meeting included Mohamed Morsi (Freedom and Justice Party), Abul-Ela Madi (Wasat Party), Mostafa El-Naggar (Adl Party), Hossam Badrawy (Itihad Party), Emad Abd El-Ghafour (Nour Party), El-Sayed El-Badawy (Wafd Party) and Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat (Reform and Development Party), along with independent MPs Mostafa Bakry and Marian Malak.
The meeting comes in the wake of several high-profile resignations among liberal and leftist members of Egypt’s recently-formed constituent assembly – tasked with drafting a new constitution – to protest the large proportion of Islamist assembly members.
Also on Tuesday, Egypt’s Constitutional Court, which is currently examining the constitutionality of the 100-member constituent assembly, adjourned the case to 10 April.
