Egyptian governors now have a discretionary authority to decide whether to suspend educational activates at schools located within their governorates as per the weather conditions foreseen by meteorologists, according to a cabinet statement.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a virtual meeting on Wednesday with cabinet members to discuss several issues, including the unstable weather and heavy rains that have showered several parts of the country over the past days.

The governors are given "a discretion to suspend study activity within their governorates, per the [weather] conditions," the statement quoted Madbouly as saying during the meeting.

The decision aims to "contribute to alleviating the impact of heavy rains in these governorates, to enable the municipal authorities to cope with the situation immediately," he added.

Earlier this week, the country was hit by a spell of unstable weather that rendered classes and lectures in Alexandria's schools and universities suspended on Saturday and Sunday.

Also, Beheira, Damietta, and Matrouh cancelled school activities on Sunday owing to the weather.

According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, Egypt is expected to see mild weather from Thursday to Saturday in the majority of governorates, with a chance of mild to heavy rainfall in other areas.
