Nine Egyptians have been evacuated from the troubled Tigray region in Ethiopia, the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa told Ahram Online on Wednesday, amid growing fears of a slide into civil war between governmental forces and the northern region's Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
“The Egyptian nationals are safe in Addis Ababa,” said the embassy.
The evacuated nationals, who were among a group of 400 people of various nationalities leaving the region, will return to Cairo tonight.
Earlier, media reports said that the Egyptian embassy has contacted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) upon becoming aware of the citizens’ situation amid limited contact in the area.
The ICRC responded by assuring the embassy about the citizens’ conditions.
Media reports said that the nationals worked in device manufacturing as well as cardboard and paper production within the region.
The conflict between Ethiopia and the Tigray region is entering its second week, raising fears of a wider war in the Horn of Africa region.
On Wednesday, Ethiopia predicted victory in the ongoing war, but northern Tigray forces promised “hell” as the two-week war killed hundreds and sent around 30,000 refugees into Sudan.
