Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi conveyed to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday his “full support” for the PA's position on political reconciliation, a statement by the Egyptian presidency read.

Presidency Spokesman Bassam Rady said El-Sisi received Abbas in Cairo in a meeting attended by Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel, his Palestinian counterpart Maged Farag, and the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo.

El-Sisi stressed that the Palestinian cause will always be a priority for Cairo, affirming continued efforts to retrieve the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people according to international legitimacy.

He added the current stage calls for intensifying Arab efforts to resume peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Abbas affirmed the importance of consultations and coordination with El-Sisi over developments in the Palestinian crisis.

He said he appreciates Cairo’s efforts, historic positions, and firm stand in supporting the Palestinian cause, and its endeavours to preserve the Palestinians’ rights and achieve national unity.

El-Sisi and Abbas agreed to continue intensified coordination to follow up on the latest measures to break the current deadlock and resume peace talks.

The meeting comes one day after El-Sisi discussed the Palestinian issue with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in a phone call. The two leaders exchanged views on means to revive the peace process in the Middle East.
