Egypt has offered its condolences to Sudan over the victims of the attack carried out against the Sudanese armed forces in the Abu Tyour area of the country's Al-Qadarif province, along the border with Ethiopia.

According to an official statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry on Thursday, Egypt expressed its "full" solidarity with Sudan and its right to defend its security and exercise sovereignty over its territories, stressing its rejection of such attacks, which it described as "unjustified."

Egypt is following with concern the recent "dangerous" field developments and its impacts on the security situation in the region, urging the adoption of all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, the statement added.

Sudan's military said a number of its officers had been ambushed by "Ethiopian forces and militias" during a security patrol of the border region on Tuesday, according to a statement reported by the Sudanese official state news agency SUNA on Wednesday.

The statement added the cross-border attack caused casualties in lives and equipment without providing more details.

Thousands of Ethiopian refugees have taken refuge in Sudan since the war in the Ethiopian Tigray region started in early November between the Ethiopian government’s forces and the northern region's Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

The conflict has caused many deaths and injuries, as well as displaced tens of thousands of refugees.

On 29 November, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared victory over the TPLF after governmental forces took control of Mekelle, the capital city of Tigray, and said it is restoring order in the city.
