Egypt’s prosecution ordered on Wednesday the detention of a 37-year-old man for four days pending investigation into charges of molesting and kidnapping a child in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.

The man was arrested on Tuesday after a video has gone viral a day earlier showing him attempting to molest a child who sold tissue boxes on the street after luring her into the entrance of a building.

Late on Monday, CCTV footage from a building in Maadi went viral on social media showing a man in a suit enter a stairwell with a small child and appears to attempt to sexually assault her. However, the act was interrupted by a woman who came out of one of the apartments and confronted the would-be assailant.

The video was reportedly uploaded on Facebook by the woman who confronted the suspect.

After the video went viral, Egypt's National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) filed a complaint with the prosecution concerning the incident.

The video stirred an uproar online and offline in Egypt.

On Wednesday, MP Ayman Abul-Ela presented a draft amendment to the House of Representatives to issue more restrictive penalties against child molestors in Egypt.

According to the Egyptian penal code, the maximum penalty for the sexual molestation of persons under 12 years old is seven years in prison.
