The Egyptian Ministry of Health detected 812 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the highest daily rise in almost three months, bringing the total cases since the outbreak last year to 210,489.

The ministry also reported 40 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 12,445.

A total of 445 patients have been discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, bringing recoveries to 159,499.

The country has been witnessing a slight increase in the daily infection rate over the past few days as the country is a third coronavirus wave has started, according to Awad Tag El-Din, the presidential advisor for health affairs.

Officials have warned of a possible rise in infections during the holy month of Ramadan, which begins on Tuesday.

As the country has started its vaccination campaign since January, more than 225,000 citizens have been vaccinated so far, according to Alaa Eid, the head of the health ministry's Preventive Medicine Department on Friday.

The campaign has so far included medical workers and other priority groups, including the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases. However, any resident in Egypt over 18 years old can register on the vaccination website.
