Egypt is engaged in continuous talks and exerting relentless efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Palestinian territories, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez told Al Jazeera Arabic news channel on Saturday.
The priority for the time being is to stop the bloodshed, Hafez noted.
He revealed that Egypt has been engaged in extensive talks with the Palestinian and Israeli sides to reach a ceasefire.
Hafez stated that Egypt is currently communicating with international concerned parties, above them the United States, to resolve the crisis.
“Following the ceasefire, we must return to the cause of the problem and try to fix it,” he said, adding that the latest developments have proven it is important to reach a political solution for the struggle.
“We have to treat the cause of the problem in order to break this action-reaction loop,” Hafez told Al Jazeera.
According to news reports, Egypt dispatched a delegation to Israel on Thursday with a ceasefire proposal, but Tel Aviv rejected it.
