Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed to his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on Monday the need to work towards launching serious negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis.
In a phone call with Motegi, Shoukry said the recent developments between the Palestinian and Israeli sides have demonstrated the importance of the Palestinian cause, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.
The developments serve as a warning against not seeking a fair, comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with the international legitimacy determinants and the two-state solution.
In late May, Egypt brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, ending 11 days of Israeli aggression on the besieged enclave that killed more than 250 Palestinians.
Shortly afterwards, Egypt dispatched the chief of the General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel to talk with key figures from the Israeli and Palestinian sides in a bid to consolidate the ceasefire.
Egypt also launched a massive initiative to support the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip after Israeli air strikes last month had destroyed hundreds of commercial and reesidential buildings and displaced tens of thousands of Palestinians.
Cairo intensified its diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, which broke down in 2014.
Motegi voiced his country’s appreciation of Egypt’s continuous efforts to reach and consolidate the ceasefire, the ministry said.
Shoukry reviewed with Motegi Egypt’s moves in this regard, including the reconstruction process and the efforts to support development in the entire Palestinian territories.
Shoukry and Motegi also discussed developments in regional and international issues.
The top diplomats agreed to continue their coordination on bilateral and regional issues of mutual concern.
They also discussed means to continue boosting Egyptian-Japanese relations.
