MP Wahid Abdel-Meguid said Monday that negotiations have reached a dead-end between political parties in deciding the details of an annex to the Constitutional Declaration, that will define the powers of the president until Egypt's full constitution is drafted.

Abdel-Meguid, independent MP and coordinator of the Muslim Brotherhood's Democratic Alliance for Egypt Coalition, made his statement after a Monday parliamentary meeting addressing the issue was cancelled indefinitely. Party representatives were expected to negotiate a recommended format for the interim constitutional document and to submit it to the ruling military council for approval.

The meeting has been postponed three times since Wednesday, Abdel-Meguid stated, after party spokespersons failed to reach common ground.

Abdel-Meguid explained that most of the political forces rejected the idea of the constitutional document and differed greatly in their amendments of it.

On Thursday 17 May, the ruling military council announced that it intended to issue an interim constitutional annex with articles that would define the authority of the upcoming president but failed to specify a timeframe.

With one month to go until Egypt's new president will be inaugurated the fate of the temporary constitutional document is unknown.
