Muslim Brotherhood Secretary-General Mohamed Hussein has called on Egyptians to save the revolution by voting for the group's candidate Mohamed Morsi.

In an interview with As-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Monday, Hussein said there is an electoral battle between Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, and the Egyptian people who want change.

"The only way to save the revolution is to support the Brotherhood's revolutionary candidate Mohamed Morsi in the presidential election runoff," Hussein said. "This is not the time to talk about guarantees because we are talking about a danger that is coming at us with all its power...so we have to unite to topple the old regime's candidate and then try and reach agreements afterwards."

Hussein also rejected calls for the formation of a presidential council to rule the country, saying it was an unrealistic solution that would not be accepted by the ruling military council.

Some revolutionary groups have called for the country to be ruled by a presidential council made up of revolutionary figures and for the postponement of presidential election runoffs slated for 16-17 June.

"The military council will not transfer power except to an elected president and will not respond to calls for a presidential council," Hussein said. "We are in the middle of a democratic electoral process and we're facing runoffs and should be putting all of our efforts into that."

The Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi will face Ahmed Shafiq in the second round of Egypt's presidential elections on 16-17 June.
