The official spokesman of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton issued a statement Wednesday on the current political situation in Egypt.

In the statement, Ashton congratulates the Egyptian people on a successful second round of the presidential elections that should result in a democratically elected head of state, which she deemed "a major step forward in the ongoing transition."

Ashton is concerned, however, about latest developments surrounding the vote, in particular the dissolution of parliament and the constitutional declaration addendum of 17 June that seriously constraints the powers of the presidency and creates uncertainties about the drafting of a new constitution.

Finally, Ashton underlined the importance of democratic institutions, a representative constitutional process and a speedy handover of power. The transition must respect the Egyptian people's aspirations and demands for dignity, democracy and freedom, the statement added.

"The High Representitive (Ashton) reiterates the EU's eagerness to engage with Egypt's democratically elected authorities," the statement said.
