Qasr El-Nil Prosecution on Wednesday summoned Muslim Brotherhood activist Ahmed El-Mogheer and independent activist Rasha Azab for questioning.

The two appeared in a widely-circulated photo on Tuesday, with Azab seemingly hitting El-Mogheer during scuffles between opposing groups of protesters outside the culture ministry building.

Artist Ahmed Sheta and five Brotherhood members who had been injured during the Tuesday scuffles were also summoned, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic language website.

Investigations into the incident are still underway.

Clashes took place outside the culture ministry on Tuesday when Brotherhood supporters reportedly attempted to break up a sit-in calling for the dismissal of culture minister Alaa Abdel-Aziz, who has attracted the ire of many members of Egypt’s arts and culture scene in recent weeks with his sackings of high profile officials.

El-Mogheer, known as a key ally of Brotherhood deputy leader Khairat El-Shater, accused Azab of beating him with a piece of marble which caused him injuries to the head, face and chest. Azab had earlier said on Twitter that the young man had been slapped and kicked twice, without saying who beat him.

The Brotherhood activist also accused spokesman for opposition group National Salvation Front Khaled Dawood, film director Khaled Youssef, political activist Mamdouh Hamza, scriptwriter Medhat El-Adel, and political activist Hazem Abdel Azim of inciting attacks against him and other Brotherhood members.

Filmmakers, writers, intellectuals and activists have been ‘occupying’ the culture ministry, based in the upmarket Cairo district of Zamalek, since last Wednesday, to protest the dismissal of five ministry officials. Protesters claim the new culture minister, appointed last month, is implementing a plan to 'Brotherhoodise' the ministry, claims Abdel-Aziz denies.

Two police conscripts were injured in the head and chest while dispersing the fighting crowds.
