An Egyptian border guard was killed and a police officer was shot in two separate incidents on late Sunday in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula.
Border guard Abdel-Wahed Abdel-Rahim, 22, was killed in clashes with unknown assailants at the Ghornata checkpoint in North Sinai. He was reportedly shot in the head.
In a second incident reported shortly afterwards, police officer Magdi El-Meligi was shot by unknown gunmen. He is currently receiving medical attention at Al-Arish Military Hospital.
The two incidents come only hours after two policemen were shot in the peninsula by unknown gunmen, leaving one of them dead.
Sources told Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news website that a full military operation was expected in Sinai within hours, following four other attacks on security checkpoints in the peninsula earlier on Sunday.
It is not the first such incident in Sinai in recent days. At least six policemen were killed last Friday in different attacks by unknown gunmen in the North Sinai city of Al-Arish.
One of them was killed in the early hours of Friday by Islamist militants.
