Qatar's foreign minister Khalid al-Atiyah is to land in Cairo on Sunday, in the first visit by a Qatari official to Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July, Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Qatar, a strong backer of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, granted Egypt some $7 billion in aid during his year in power.

The oil-rich Gulf state has expressed alarm over violence in Egypt as well as continued detention of the deposed Islamist leader.

Most Gulf Arab states, wary of the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood on Islamist oppositionists in their own countries, have welcomed the army's ouster of Morsi. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait swiftly offered Egypt $12 billion in aid packages after Morsi's ouster.
