Seventeen dead were transported from the scene. Another body was found later, raising the death toll to 18. Three were injured and transported to Amereya Hospital.
The road was cleared after traffic was blocked for almost 40 minutes.
According to a study conducted between 2010 and 2012 by Bloomberg Philanthropy, as part of a programme on road safety, Egypt was listed as one of 10 countries with the highest level of road accidents.
The study found that worldwide 1.3 million people die in road accidents annually. In Egypt alone, an average of 31,000 die annually in road accidents.
