Unidentified men detonate bomb outside police station in North Sinai's Sheikh Zuweyed; reports of heavy gunfire in clashes between security forces and militants

A bomb has been detonated near a police station in Sheikh Zuwayed, North Sinai, state news agency MENA reports. There are no reported causalities.

Unidentified persons placed the bomb at the police station's outer fence before it exploded on Tuesday morning, a security source told MENA.

Meanwhile, clashes are ongoing between security forces and militants in the city's market area. Heavy gunfire has been reported. There are no reported injuries.

Late on Monday, unidentified militants opened fire on a police station, the central prison, and the traffic administration office in the nearby city of Arish.
Security forces returned fire and chased the attackers, according to reports.

On Saturday, similar clashes erupted in Sheikh Zuwayed between the army and militants.

Attacks by suspected Islamist militants on police and military sites in the lawless North Sinai region have spiked since the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July. Dozens of security and army personnel have been killed in drive-by shootings and rocket attacks.
