The Way of The Revolution Front called on school and university students, as well as instructors, to demonstrate on Wednesday at Cairo's Ministry of Education in protest against security "violations and blatant intervention in student affairs."

The Front said it supported a call for protests by activists on Facebook who, on their event page, said two students had been arrested at Cairo's Al-Matariya Secondary School after raising their hands with the 'Rabaa' sign -- used by Brotherhood loyalists at demonstrations. The group added, however, that the students were released shortly afterwards.

Since the students’ return to school last week, police and army forces have been deployed at schools and universities as antagonism unravels between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and their opponents.

Tensions have escalated noticeably on university campuses, with scuffles breaking out between Brotherhood loyalists and their rivals, usually following protests by the former.

On the other hand, a song praising the army for responding to the mass protests against president Mohamed Morsi's rule and ousting him on 3 July led to brawls at several schools last week when it was broadcast by some administrators instead of the national anthem.

Education Minister Mahmoud Abul-Nasr banned schools from broadcasting songs supporting or condemning the military, a high-profile source at the Education Ministry said on Sunday.

The protest is the first street action called by The Way of The Revolution Front, which was launched on 24 September, aiming to provide an alternative to the current "polarisation" between the military and Muslim Brotherhood. The Front includes leading members of April 6 Youth Movement, Strong Egypt Party, the Revolutionary Socialists and the Justice and Freedom Youth.
