The prosecution accused the actor of sexually groping the bodies of six victims and attempting to kiss them forcibly while he was coaching them.

The seventh victim, who also received an acting training course, said she was assaulted while sitting with him in a café.

The actor denied the accusations, telling the investigators that "this is a social media campaign meant to tarnish my reputation," the prosecution's statement read.

The actor, 43, has been detained pending trial.

The alleged assaulter played small roles in a number of movies over the past years, the most famous of which was in Heya Fawda (This is Chaos, 2007), the last movie of late renowned filmmaker Youssef Chahin.

Sunday's decision is one of the latest measures taken by the prosecutor-general in sexual assault cases, which continue to be brought to light amid a revived wave of the #MeToo movement that encourages victims to come forward with their sexual assault and harassment stories.

A number of sexual violence-related incidents have been under investigation in the past months.

To encourage the victims of sexual crimes to speak up, Egypt has approved last year a law to keep the identity of victims of sexual assault and harassment confidential.

Under the Egyptian penal code, sexual assault is punishable by a minimum prison sentence of seven years and a maximum of life imprisonment.
