In an official statement, the prosecutor-general said that the defendant is also charged with driving recklessly under the influence of alcohol and drugs, exceeding the maximum speed limit, breaking road laws, and possessing cocaine for personal use.
Footage on social media showed a vehicle driving way over the speed limit on a highway in the city on Friday before violently rear-ending another car.
The defendant, who fled the scene after the rear-ended car flipped over, was detained on Saturday, and on Sunday the prosecution ordered his detention for four days pending investigation.
The prosecution announced on Monday that it has built a case around the testimonies it obtained, including two eyewitnesses, two videos recording the accident, two policemen — one of which was notified of the crash and the other carried out the investigations — and finally the coroner who examined the blood sample taken from the defendant.
Manslaughter is punishable with a fine ranging from EGP 100 to EGP 500 or by up to 10 years in prison according to Egyptian law.
According to article 238 of the Egyptian penal code, manslaughter due to negligence and recklessness is punishable by a fine of up to EGP 200 or at least six months in prison.
In the event the defendant committed the crime under the influence, the penalty can range from up to five years in prison or a fine of EGP 500 at most.
If the defendant caused the death of more than three people, they could face a one-to-seven-year-long prison sentence. In the event the perpetrator was under the influence, they could serve a one-to-10-year-long prison sentence.
