A Giza Criminal Court sentenced Karim El-Hawary — the son of renowned Egyptian businessman — on Saturday to three years in prison for unintentionally killing four young men in a car crash while driving under the influence in Giza governorate last year.

El-Hawary rear-ended the victims’ car while driving at high speed under the influence of drugs and alcohol on a high-way in Giza’s Sheikh Zayed, according to the prosecution.

He is also being accused of negligence, carelessness, and other related misdemeanours.

The prosecution built its case on the testimonies of six witnesses, including the coroner, who examined a sample taken from El-Hawary that came back positive for drugs and ethyl alcohol.

In the leadup to today’s hearing, the families of the victims reportedly waived their rights to civil claims — a procedure that both panel and criminal codes allow in such crimes.

The civil claim, however, is related only to compensations that can be asked for, meaning that the waiving of such rights does not mean exemption from criminal responsibility.

Saturday’s verdict can be appealed before the country’s Court of Cassation.
