According to Egyptian law, life imprisonment is 25 years in prison.
The court sentenced 53 defendants to 15 years, and 35 defendants to 10 years.
The court also acquitted 43 other defendants in the case that has a total of 167 defendants.
The Helwan Brigades is a designated terrorist group that first appeared in a video posted and circulated on social media in 2014, which showed 15 masked armed men warning that they would carry out an attack against the police in southern Cairo.
The defendants have been accused of a range of criminal charges connected with the group’s activities in the period between August 2013 and February 2015.
They were accused of the premediated murder of a number of police personnel and civilians.
The charges included forming an illegal group, sabotaging public facilities, incitement of violating the constitution and law, as well as preventing the state from exercising its role.
In addition, they have been accused of assaulting personal freedoms of citizens, and harming national unity and social peace.
In 2018, 135 defendants in this trial were placed on the country's terrorist list for a three-year term by Egypt’s Cassation Court in 2018.
